Version 0.17: This article may not be up to date for the latest stable release of Crawl.
An unfathomably ancient skeleton. It has hundreds of golden sigils etched onto its bones, and pulses with terrible, unholy power.

Useful Info

Ancient champions are dangerous undead foes with powerful spellcasting abilities and good weapons and armour. They can be found in the Crypt, often leading a band of skeletal warriors.

Spells

Tile Name Damage Range Flags
Iron Shot 3d26 4 Wizard flag
Haste — — Wizard flag

Tips & Tricks

  • All ancient champions are considerable threats in melee, wearing plate mail and wielding heavy, branded two-handed weapons, in addition to usually being able to haste themselves. However, their spell sets vary considerably in threat level: Bolt of Draining and Iskenderun's Mystic Blast are both fairly negligible, while Iron Shot and Haunt are much harder to deal with. Consider switching to an amulet of warding if you suddenly find yourself surrounded by summoned ghosts. Or have Aura of Abjuration at hand.
  • Despite their deadliness and solid defenses, they don't have terribly high HP; Dispel Undead's irresistible damage will take care of these very easily.

History

Prior to 0.13, ancient champions were a variant of skeletal warriors that were only found in one specific vault.
