Version 0.13: This article may not be up to date for the latest stable release of Crawl.

Each piece of body armour or barding has its own encumbrance rating. This is a measure of how much the equipment gets in the way of your attacks, spellcasting, and attempts to evade enemy attacks. In general, the heavier the equipment, the greater the encumbrance rating will be. You can reduce the impact of your encumbrance rating by increasing your strength or Armour skill.

History

Encumbrance ratings will be introduced in 0.13, replacing the EV penalty system.
