A servant of Beogh, the ancient god of the orcs. Beogh rewards its devoted prayers by striking down its enemies.

For a list of all orcs, see list of orcs.

Useful Info

Orc priests introduce smiting into the game at levels where smiting is scary. So long as an orc priest is visible, it is capable of instantly dealing 7-17 damage to you in a single turn. Even worse, they usually appear along with a pack of orcs, orc wizards, and orc warriors, and can appear as early as Dungeon:2.

If you are sufficiently injured when a priest is in your line of sight, you may be given the ability to convert to Beogh, the orc god, unless you are a Demigod or are already worshipping a god. If this happens, you will gain the Beogh Status, and a unique message will be displayed. To accept, use the abilities menu, which will show an option to convert. If you decide to convert, all orcs within your LOS will become neutral, unless you've abandoned Beogh in the past.

Tips & Tricks

  • Orc priests can be neutralized by hiding from their line of sight (they will try to rush you if they can't smite you), making them confused/paralyzed, or trapping them in a throwing net.
  • Avoid fights where they get to cast against you for several turns while you have to chop a path through their allies.
  • Very early characters may wish to avoid them entirely, if they don't have an easy way of killing them quickly. If you see more than one priest at a time, start running.
  • Converting to Beogh can save you if you get in a bad situation involving an orc priest, but note that Beogh doesn't work well with area-of-effect magic or ranged attacks, as your apostles won't be protected from your attacks.

History

  • Prior to 0.32, only hill orc characters could be converted to Beogh, and they didn't need to be injured to be given this ability when they met an orc priest.
  • Prior to 0.13, hill orc characters had to either begin the game as a priest or find an appropriate altar in the Orcish Mines to worship Beogh.
