The Saprovore mutation reduces your odds of becoming nauseous when eating contaminated chunks, and also allows you to eat rotten meat (though at a higher risk of nausea and for less nutrition than when eating fresh meat). This mutation does not provide the benefits of the Carnivore mutation; saprovores cannot eat chunks unless hungry or worse. Saprovores get different messages when food rots in their backpack.

The saprovore mutation only exists as a starting mutation for orcs, ogres, trolls, kobolds, and ghouls, or as a possible demonspawn mutation. It may not be acquired from random mutations, nor may it be lost.

Saprovore Ranks Contaminated Meat Nausea Rate Rotten Meat Nausea Rate Species
0 33.3% N/A, inedible Most species
1 6.6% 20% Orc, Ogre, some Demonspawn
2 2.2% 6.6% Troll, Kobold
3 0% 0% Ghoul*
  • Saprovore 3 is linked to a ghoul's ability to recover HP while eating meat. In Wizard mode, ghouls without Saprovore 3 lost their ability to recover HP in this way, and non-ghouls given Saprovore 3 did not suddenly gain the ability.
