3	Monster melee attacks cause a 2 + 1d(XL + 1) retaliation.	You are completely covered in sharp spines.
Blocked attacks don't cause retaliation. For more details, see spiny.

Prior to 0.19, damage depended only on the mutation rank.

Prior to 0.17, the 'spiny' mutation was dramatically weaker, as it was reduced by the AC and Encumbrance of worn armor.
