A +4 or -4 ring of protection affects the of the wearer. If the enchantment is negative, the ring is normally cursed. Even if you've identified rings of protection in general, you won't know if the enchantment is positive or negative until after you've put it on.

A ring that protects its wearer from harm.

A +4 ring of protection boosts the AC of the wearer.

Desirability

All characters are going to want more AC, but sacrificing a ring slot for it may or may not be a good idea. Unlike most amulets, rings take effect immediately, so you can quickly switch between them at need. Rings of protection are more likely to be useful for characters with low AC; mechanically, there is a much larger difference between 5 and 9 AC compared to 25 and 29. In particular, characters that cannot wear some or all types of armour (spriggans, ogres, trolls, octopodes, felids) will appreciate having a ring of protection.

History

 • Prior to 0.27, oft cursed -4 rings of protection could generate.
 • Prior to 0.25 enchantments were random values between 1 and 6 (positive and negative).
