You can create potions of degeneration by casting [[Fulsome Distillation]] on most very large contaminated corpses. Doing so will identify the potion, but the only real use for it is to throw it with [[Evaporate]], creating a 3x3 [[cloud]] of [[miasma]], which can be useful when dealing with groups of monsters. Alternatively, [[Xom]] is somewhat amused if you quaff an unidentified potion of degeneration, but this is almost impossible to do intentionally.

A noxious concotion which reduces strength, intelligence and dexterity.

Quaffing a potion of degeneration temporarily reduces each stat (strength, dexterity, and intelligence) by 1-3 points. This can be dangerous (although not directly fatal) for species with very low stats, since reaching zero or less in a stat will cause stat zero penalties. The lost stats will recover over time as experience is gained. Xom is somewhat amused if you quaff an unidentified potion of degeneration, but this is hard to do intentionally.

There was something very wrong with that liquid!

History

  • In 0.33, potions of degeneration were replaced by potions of moonshine.
  • Prior to 0.18, the potion lowered a random stat by 1-4 instead of decreasing every stat by 1-3.
  • Prior to 0.13, having a stat reduced to 0 could cause stat death. This was replaced by the stat zero penalties.
